Finasteride is an FDA-approved medication for the treatment of hair loss in men. Finasteride belongs to a class of drugs known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. Finasteride works by preventing testosterone from breaking down into DHT, the hormone that is thought to cause male pattern baldness.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia
Finasteride may improve symptoms of BPH and provide benefits as decreased urge to urinate, better urine flow with less straining, less of a feeling that the bladder is not completely emptied, and decreased nighttime urination. The medication works by decreasing the amount of a natural body hormone (DHT) that causes growth of the prostate.
Male pattern baldness
Finasteride is used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. Treatment provides about 30% improvement in hair loss after six months of treatment, and effectiveness only persists if the drug is taken.
Off-label uses
Finasteride is sometimes used in hormone replacement therapy for male-to-female transsexuals in combination with a form of estrogen due to its antiandrogen properties. However, little clinical research of finasteride use for this purpose has been conducted and evidence of efficacy is limited.
Finasteride works by decreasing the amount of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in your body. DHT normally causes your prostate to grow larger.
The decrease in DHT helps prevent your prostate from growing larger. It also leads to increased hair growth and decreased hair loss of the hair on your head. Hair growth on other parts of the body isn’t affected.
